Whether underground in mines, underwater, during avalanche rescues, during earthquakes, people trapped in ship hulls, or in other difficult-to-reach environments, acoustic communication often involves shouts or knocks. Loud ambient noises, such as waves in the ocean or noisy urban environments after earthquakes, disrupt such important signals or make recordings difficult to interpret.
